CHAPTER NINETEEN

One by one we made our way up the Hovercopter walkway. Penelope stayed in front of me, and Lex behind me.

When I set out to rescue Penelope, I definitely didn’t see things going like this. I wasn’t expecting it to be easy, but I never for once thought it would be this difficult either. Death was always a possibility, but now it was a guarantee, which just sucked.

Once we were inside, Troum ordered the pilot to lift the walkway, sealing us in. “Guards, will you see to it that our prisoners are buckled in?” he asked, moving in to sit beside the pilot.

With his back to us, his men lowered us into our seats and crossed the seatbelts over our chests. Hunter, the guard from the cells, leaned in and whispered in my ear, “If I undo your cuffs, do you promise to behave until we arrive at the beach?” His eyes, which were a rich honey brown, stood out against his cropped blond hair. “Well?” he asked when I didn’t respond right away.

I glanced over in Troum’s direction and nodded.

“He’s up to something,” he said, slipping his hands behind my back. “I don’t know what it is, but I know that you’re my best chance of finding out.”

As Hunter struggled to slip the key into the lock, I kept my eyes focused on Troum. We weren’t far from the beach as it was, which meant that Hunter didn’t have a lot of time before Troum brought his attention back to us.

I heard the click as the cuffs unlocked. “I’m going to keep them loose,” he kept his voice low, and his eyes focused on the other guards who stood in front of Penelope and Lex.

“Do they know?” I asked, nodding to the others.

“They suspect something,” he replied. “We all do.”

As my eyes searched over the guards, I noticed that Easton was nowhere to be found. “Where’s your friend?” I asked. “The one from the cells?”

Hunter smirked. “He was sent to gather the Sectors along with the other guards.”

“Does he suspect anything?” I asked, dropping my gaze to the floor.

“He’s Troum’s lapdog,” he said, shaking his head. “If Troum told him to jump, he’d ask how high. He still believes that he has our best interests at heart.”

As the Hovercopter lifted off the ground, Hunter, along with the other guards, strapped themselves into the seats directly across from us. I could feel Lex’s eyes on me, burning with curiosity, throughout the short trip.

A few days earlier, I believed that I was the only person who believed there was still life outside of these walls. A few days earlier, I believed that I was the only person willing to fight back against Troum. But now? I wasn’t sure that was entirely true.

Things were different now.

It was as though people were finally opening their eyes. Something they hadn’t done since the Outbreak.

When the virus swept through the United States, everyone flew into a panic. It was complete and utter chaos because we weren’t sure what would happen.
